Prof's poster gets castrated
UVSC's only Artist in Residence Alex Caldiero recently put together a poster advertising his Humanities 2020 course for next semester. On his poster he featured Caravaggio's Cupid Triumphant, along with other works that would be studied during the class.
But apparently the 400 year-old masterpiece, which features the mischievous cherub in the buff, is a little too risqué for the young impressionable student of UVSC.
Like all posters on campus, Caldiero's poster must be approved by Campus Connection. He was told last week that the school has a policy outlawing nudity on any campus posters or flyers, and Campus Connection refused to give their stamp, which is needed if the poster will be displayed on campus.
Caldiero was told on Monday that Academic Affairs VP Liz Hitch will be reviewing the poster, but as of yet he has not heard her decision. Needless to say, The Pipeline will keep you posted.
In the meantime, Caldiero is shocked that a public college would cause such a stink over a piece of art, especially one as important as the Caravaggio.
UPDATE: After over a week Calderio learned that Hitch finally approved his poster, but did so without comment as to why the process took so long, or why it was held up in the first place.

Orem city council candidates worry about UVU growth
UVSC's transition to UVU, and the expansion and traffic that will come with that transition, seems to be on the minds of Orem's six city council candidates.
Orem City Council candidates say growth, UVSC are top concerns
(Salt Lake Tribune, October 29 2007)
The Pipeline spoke recently to one of the candidates, UVSC employee Brent Sumner, who said that during his door-to-door campaigning many campus neighbors say UVSC's growth is their number one concern.
Student housing also seems to be a concern among most of the candidates. With enrollment expected to rise to 40,000 students, according to some particularly rosy estimates, providing housing is going to be a huge issue. Candidate Mark Seastrand wants to restrict student housing to those complexes to the west side of I-15 (think Parkway Crossing).
By the way...candidate Carl Hernandez's campaign manager is UVSC VP Val Hale...we thought you should know.

The State Board of Regents has given preliminary approval for tuition increases for each of its colleges and universities. UVSC's first-tier tuition will go up 2.62 percent.

Parkway Crossing gets new life as Orem City approves married student housing
Parkway Crossing entered the UVSC housing scene over three years ago with some big plans. Students were told that the mixed-use complex would house over 6,000 students and have amenities like a high-speed gondola that would wisk them across I-15 and drop them off at UVSC.
But three years later and only two of the planned six phases have been completed. The stores that set shop on the street level have been vacant, apartment vacancy rates vacillated heavily, and the original owners cut bait and ran.
But now Parkway Crossing might be headed for a comeback thanks to Orem's City Council.
Orem opens way for new married student housing
(Daily Herald, October 25 2007)
Orem City will allow the current developers to zone for condos that can be used by both married and single students. The hope is that with more variety in housing choices Parkway Crossing can start making some money.

New logos are ready for your disapproval
Surveys were e-mailed today to selected folks asking for opinions on the top choices for new UVU logos...And in The Pipeline's humble opinion, they all looked awful.
Now we would love to post the screen captures we nabbed during the survey...but chances are the College Marketing department would go crazy. All of the logos say things like "not for distribution". And we would love to provide a link to the online survey...but it is tied to the e-mail adddress it was sent to, and can only be completed once.
Chances are we will all get to see these monstrosities soon enough. We can say that all four of the main designs looked like Rare Method (the designers hired for the redesign) were trying really hard to make the letters UVU do cutesy little things (like the negative space make the shape of Utah). One design was so convoluted that it was barely readable. Another one looked like a rip off of West Virginia's logo. All of them featured a boxy font that looked a lot like the firm's designs for Murray City.
The survey said not to pay attention to colors, as the colors were not finalized yet. But the colors that were used were awful...including a baby vomit green, and even a dark blue that looked like it belonged on a Cougar.
The sports logos were slightly better...with one design looking a lot like Rare Method's design for the Utah Blaze. They even redesigned the Wolverine logo (commonly known as "The Creature"). On the survey they asked if the current logo was better...but if the school's colors are going to change, then chances are the current Creature has got to change too. Their new wolverine is neon green for some reason.
All in all, the choices were very disappointing. Our advice is to start hoarding UVU gear now before this ugly crap hits the shelves.

"Honey...It's Ronnie Price on the phone for you!"
We found an amazing little nugget while checking out UVSC student Sam Garfield's blog. Apparently the school has former basketball star and current Jazz pine-rider Ronnie Price recording phone messages that get sent to a database of UVSC telephone numbers.
UVSC: Utah Valley Spam College
(October 11 2007)
According to Sam he got a call from Robot Ronnie on his cell phone. After the message, there was a recording that let Sam unsubscribe from the service. Funny thing is Sam...and everybody else...probably never signed up to be called in the first place.
Weird.

New article sheds light on Yohannes case
In an excellent piece of investigative journalism, College Times reporter Joseph Laney has uncovered several facts that call the arrest of UVSC student Kidus Yohannes into question.
Nine digits
Yohannes kept in solitary confinement based on numerical discrepancy
(College Times, October 22 2007)
You might recall that Yohannes, an Ethiopian immigrant, was arrested over the summer and charged with falsifying information on a firearms application. At the time of his arrest, which was shortly after the tragic campus shootings at Virginia Tech, his roommates claimed that Yohannes often talked about killing police officers and members of the military.
Laney's article examines the case against him thoroughly, and with evidence this flakey it makes one wonder why Yohannes is still held on $250,000 bail.

It's Official: Woodbury's give UVSC $20 million for Business School
After a week or so of UVSC administrators refusing to comment, the details of the largest donation in the school's history was finally made official last Friday when it was announced that the School of Business has been renamed the Woodbury School of Business in recognition of the $20 million donation made by the Woodbury family.
UVSC gets $20 million gift
Donation by Woodburys given to business school
(Deseret Morning News, October 20 2007)
Funny that the Daily Herald, the paper that had actually scooped this story a week ago, didn't have an article about Friday's announcement. Perhaps the editors felt they didn't need to after getting right the first time.
No details were announced on how UVSC might use these new funds, which will be paid out of a trust for the next 10 years, but it makes sense that at least some of the money will be used to establish the MBA program they have been talking since being granted university status.
And no word yet if Arizona philanthropist Ira Fulton will match the Woodbury donation.

Big property management company loses BYU-approved status
Total Propert Management, which runs some 50 or so properties throughout Provo, has lost its BYU Housing Approved status.
TPM Loses BYU Approval
(ProvoPulse.com, October 16 2007)
Any student who lives in Provo around the BYU campus knows this is a big deal. Single BYU students not living at home or in the school's dorms must live in BYU Approved housing unit. This designation insures that the property follows a strict housing policy that includes enforcing BYU's honor code. UVSC students who also live in BYU Approved apartments (which is just about every student apartment complex in Provo) also need to follow BYU's honor code; which outlaws smoking, drinking, and sex.
TPM has had a bad rap amongst students for several years, with most complaints coming from the way the company upkeeps their properties and charges fees.
BYU students currently living in TPM managed properties will need to make arrangements after December. Word on the street is that other management companies are swooping in to take over these properties.

UVSC goes Wiki
UVSC has joined the Wiki-revolution and built its own Wiki page for anyone to look at or edit. Check it out:
http://wiki.uvsc.edu
OK...so there isn't much there. It looks like it went live just last week. And of course because it is from the college marketing folks you can bet that anything that is in the least bit disparaging will be removed post haste. But we were impressed to see that The Pipeline made it on the Current Events page.

Is Academics headed for a major change?
The Pipeline has been hearing rumblings from various corners of campus about a major shake-up in Academics for months now. There had been whispers about departments moving around, departments getting split up, and whole schools being overhauled. But nothing was ever definite....all just rumor and conjecture.
Well it still isn't official yet, but now at least there is a concrete document from VP of Academics Liz Hitch's office that lays out some of the plans. If even half of this stuff actually happens (it looks like it probably will) it will be the biggest change the campus has seen in many years. Check it out:
Organizational Redesign for Academic Affairs (doc)
The document is dated October 8 but the footer at the bottom of each page says September 20. We know that Hitch sent an e-mail to some faculty and staff that included this link recently.
As for what is going to happen, we will let you read the document yourself. But if you are really lazy here is the list of substantial changes listed in the report:
1. Aviation, Emergency Services, Fine and Performing Arts, Social Sciences, and Health Science become schools reporting to a dean.
2. There are no substantial changes in the School of Education.
3. Forensic Science moves to Biology.
4. The School of Business will divide the Department of Management into two smaller groups.
6. The School of Business will send Criminal Justice faculty to the department of Anthropology/Sociology in the School of Language and Social Sciences.
7. The School of Business will assume Culinary Arts faculty in hospitality management.
8. The College of General Academics will be renamed “University College.”
9. University College will include remedial programs as well as programs for high academic achievers, such as Honors, Debate, Integrated Studies and Humanities.
10. Speech Communication faculty from the current Communication Department will be assigned to the University College as a core academic skill. The debate program will be housed in or near Honors.
11. Honors will be in University College.
12. A centralized Graduate Office will be formed in the VPAA office.
13. ESL goes to the School of Adult and Continuing Education.
14. Turning Point, Wee Care, Women in Technology, and other appropriate programs that provide student services go to Student Services.
In other words...big changes. There is way more to this story, but we'll save that for future posts.

Currently in Utah only Weber State offers a bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene. Of course the state's Board of Regents will need to give the final word on UVSC's proposal. There is a Regents meeting scheduled for October 24 at Utah State...no word if this item will be on the agenda yet, but we assume it will be

Dreams of a green campus
The Pipeline is not much for sentimentality so when we decided to participate in this year's Blog Action Day it was because we had something very specific in mind.
This year's theme is the environment and it just so happens that The Pipeline has been researching some ideas that would make UVSC a leader in Green Technologies, and at the same time revitalize the school's diminishing Trades program.
Imagine a construction program that featured the latest resources in Green technology, LEED certification, and hands-on experience in environmental projects. Imagine an automotive department that valued MPG over MPH.
For the past five years the administration has been pushing the trades program to look more like a college and less like a trade school. All the while UVSC's traditional trades programs, such as welding, have diminished; losing market share to cheaper alternatives like the Mountainlands Applied Technology Center.
It is is time to cut off programs that refuse to innovate, and replace them with programs that feature green technologies. UVSC's trades graduates would be in high demand in an expanding industry that is in desperate need of qualified LEED craftsmen. Why not prepare students for this opportunity?
And what better place for students to practice using these new materials and techniques than right here on campus. Many colleges across the country have completed retrofitting projects that have brought their facilities up to LEED's gold standard. Why not UVSC? Students from our programs could work side by side with contractors, learning these techniques and gaining valuable hands-on experience.

USA Today and Deseret Morning News get trial run on campus
UVSC news junkies have been enjoying their free copies of the New York Times for over two years now, and now USA Today and the Deseret Morning News will join the battle for students' attention.
Starting this Monday and for the next four weeks (though we have also heard it might be six weeks) students will be able to pick up free copies of both papers. Students will be surveyed and the school will decide if it wants to foot the bill on a regular basis.
Not everyone is thrilled about USA Today's colorful coverage...one dean equated it to Marvel Comics. But serious news watchers will be happy to know that the Times will still be around.
One administrator said he is hoping that the costs of all these publications (perhaps even the Wall Street journal for business students) will be added to the school's general budget. Right now the subscription fee is rolled into student fees.
Now all we need is a better recycling system for all these newspapers.

UVSC College Times gets new website
Our friends over at the College Times have sloughed off their old website and have just launched www.uvcollegetimes.com.
Not everything is working just yet, but it looks nice and should provide a lot more functionality. The RSS feed isn't operational right now, but we'll add it to our feeds when it is.
One problem is the fact that the name UVCollegeTimes will soon be anachronistic.

UVSC bucks statewide trend with positive enrollment numbers
The state Board of Education has released enrollment numbers for Utah's public colleges and universities, and while overall the numbers are flat UVSC gained the most students and had the second highest percentage of growth over last fall's numbers.
Enrollment remains flat at Utah colleges
Recruitment to become more competitive as numbers stay steady
(Salt Lake Tribune, October 12 2007)
While this news is no big surprise for UVSC, it is nice to see what numbers other schools are posting. Here are the headcounts for all nine schools:
U of U: 27,685 -2.15%
USU: 21,455 +1.10%
Weber: 17,089 -1.16%
SUU: 6,410 +4.94%
Snow: 3,202 -9.65%
Dixie: 5,209 -2.43%
CEU: 1,799 -3.95%
UVSC: 20,959 +3.44%
SLCC: 23,824 +0.01%
Higher Ed
Total: 127,632 -0.09%
If that number seems a little low for UVSC, who usually boasts of having 24,000 students we can only assume the state is not counting high school students taking in concurrent enrollment classes.
School of Business to get new name and a load of money
While no one on campus is willing to go on record, it seems everyone is flapping their lips about a huge donation coming to UVSC's business school next week.
Large gift to UVSC's school of business
(Daily Herald, October 12 2007)
The Herald is reporting that the gift will be between $15-20 million, and come courtesy of the Woodbury family. As part of the donation the School of Business will change it's name, probably to something like the Woodbury School of Business. Again, no one on campus is being quoted on the particulars here, so we will probably have to wait until the official announcement on October 19.
The School of Business currently resides in the Woodbury Business Building on campus. No word yet if some of the donated money will be allocated to improving the aging structure, but the school's master plan does indicate eventual expansion.
The Woodbury's have also donated space at their University Mall for the Woodbury Art Museum.
No word if uber-philanthropist Ira Fulton will match this huge gift. The Arizona homebuilder has matched other major gifts this year, including Brent Brown's $1 million donation for the school's baseball facility, and just last week he matched the $1 million donation from Clyde Companies Inc.

President Sederburg recovering from knee surgery
It is not uncommmon for UVSC president Bill Sederburg to mention tennis when speaking to large groups. He'll usually make some good-natured joke about a guest politician's game or lack there of. And he usually alludes to the fact that his bum knee keeps him from playing better. Last Friday Big Bill went under the knife to repair a torn meniscus.

Here is hoping the next time he needs a folksy introduction he forgoes the old tennis stories and just shows everyone his gnarly scars.

Local big wigs discuss the future of UVSC
This past Monday UVSC hosted a pow-wow with leaders from the state and local government , as well as business leaders and educators from throughout Utah County.
Leaders look at role of UVSC
Identity issues involving school, region discussed
(Deseret Morning News, October 9 2007)
One of the most interesting facts brought up during the meeting was this one:
For instance, Hispanic students are the majority in seven of Provo's 11 elementary schools, said RaDene Hatfield, president-elect of the Provo Council PTA.
A few months back there was an article in the Daily Herald said that all of UVSC's recruitment material was also available in Spanish. There were some in the community who complained that students should be able to speak English before going to college.
More minority students going to college
(Daily Herald, August 4 2007)
Clearly if UVSC is going to continue to meet the needs of the community it will need to reach out to Hispanic students and their parents (for who the Spanish recruitment material was intended for).

Former UVSC dance instructor's slip is showing
A weird little story in today's papers tell the tale of Mark Baker, a former dance instructor at UVSC, who was caught red-handed with dresses missing from the school's inventory.

SUU instructor charged with stealing UVSC costumes
(Daily Herald, October 3 2007)
The best part is that Baker had the ball(gown)s to feature the stolen gear in an online video production (man, we hope it was only a dance video) which was seen by someone at UVSC, who recognized the stuff and notified the authorities.
Baker, who has been suspended from his job as the director of SUU's ballroom dance company, will be in court later this month.

UVSC Trustee to challenge Cannon for 3rd district seat
Former BYU place-kicker and current UVSC Trustee Jason Chaffetz announced today that we will run against Chris Cannon for the republican nomination for Utah's 3rd district congressional seat.

Two Republicans challenge Congressman Chris Cannon
(Salt Lake Tribune, October 1 2007)
While there was no announcement on what this will mean for his responsibilities at UVSC , we have to speculate that he might be stepping down. This much is for sure, Big Bill would love to have a former trustee (even a former Cougar) in Washington.

Status of the transition
With the July 1st deadline looming, folks at UVSC are scrambling to get all things university in order.
UVSC transition under way
School will officially become a university on July 1, 2008
(Deseret Morning News, September 28 2007)
There are a lot of things that need fixin' on campus, just check out the comments section in the article above and you'll find folks bitchin' about things like the Math Department and student services. And how can you blame them?
But the best part of the article was this little nugget from our friends in the Athletics:
"Basically, our response is, we're ready to go through Division I transition," said Megan Kennedy, an assistant athletic director, explaining how UVSC is in its fifth of six years of provisional Division I status with the NCAA.
First of all, the move from college to university has nothing to do with the NCAA or Division I status. UVSC could start a Ph.D program tomorrow and it wouldn't change the fact that the school is not in a conference, and it is no closer to getting in a conference than it was five years ago.
Much like a certain war, UVSC Athletics has never come up with an exit strategy for when it fails to get into a conference next year. Will the school continue to be an independent? Can it afford to operate without conference funding, not to mention a far-flung travel schedule? Will fans support a team that will never develop rivalries with other conference schools? Will athletes sign scholarship agreements knowing that they have little to no chance of participating in national championships?
Yet the Athletic department says "We are ready!"
