MATC grabs more trades students

As UVSC transitions to a university the founding (and floundering) trades program continues to lose market share to Mountainlands Applied Technology Center. And now UVSC is ceding a significant portion of its apprenticeship program to the much cheaper MATC.

Apprentice programs rewired
MATC partnering with UVSC to train students
(Deseret Morning News, November 25 2007)

According to the article, UVSC has surveyed local trades employers and found that most could care less about whether their employees have associates degrees or not. Why would students pay more money and take superfluous classes to get a degree that won't matter to their employers?

New leads in murder case of UVSC Hockey coach

It has been over a week since UVSC assistant hockey coach Ken Dolezsar, and his killer is still on the loose. But Sandy police have some "good and promising" leads in the case.

Students produce Spanish version of campus news

Veronica Lopez is the executive producer of UVSC's student broadcast team, and this year she has added the occaisional Spanish news show. There is a very nice story about it in today's Herald

Particularly interesting are the multitude of anti-immigration, and some downright xenophobic, posters in the Herald's forum.

The Salt Lake Tribune picked up an AP version of the story:

BYU researchers find that protests are bad for business, good for irony

Researchers from Cornell University and BYU have co-authored a study that says protests have negative effects on companies' bottom lines.

Building a High-speed data link between Utah collleges

Utah State University and the University of Utah are discussing the possibility of building a high-speed data link between the two schools. (Salt Lake Tribune, November 8 2007)

As expected the first master's degrees will be in education, and if the proposal gets approval from the State Board of Regents the program could start in the August of '08. Classes would be at night to allow current teachers to continue working while earning their degrees. The school also plans heavier workloads for graduate students during the summer.

It is expected that the UVU will accept between 20-30 new students into the Master's of Education program each year.

Why is this on the UVSC Police Website?

It has been nearly six months since UVSC student Kidus Yohannes was arrested for allegedly falsifying information on a firearms form. Currently he sits in Utah County Jail awaiting trial.

At the time of his arrest UVSC Police posted Yohannes's mugshot on their website, warning students that if they saw him on campus to call police. It seemed to make sense at the time...Yohannes's roommates had claimed that the Ethiopian immigrant had made threats against police and the military. The shootings at Virginia Tech were still fresh on everyone's minds.

But why does the UVSC Police department feel it necessary to still have Yohannes's mugshot on their page? And why does it include the caption "made terroristic threats and was aquiring weapons."

Beyond the poor spelling, the statement is potentially libelous. Yohannes has never been formally charged with making threats. As for acquiring weapons, he passed the necessary background checks with both alien ID numbers he used. So while he is being held on charges of falsifying permit documents, he did acquire the weapons legally.

Regardless, he has not been found guilty of anything just yet. But the Police website doesn't mention "charges" or "allegedly". They simply state that he made threats and was acquiring weapons. And by allowing this libelous statement to be viewable on the school's website UVSC could be sued.

And why is he on the website to begin with? He is in jail and thus currently poses no threat to the campus. It is almost like they are bragging about nabbing this guy, but they weren't the ones who arrested him in the first place. The arrest was made by Orem City...not UVSC campus police.

In the Pipeline's opinion this whole thing goes back to a much simpler issue: UVSC campus police are bored to tears.

For example, back during the whole Michael Moore hoopla in '04 there was a meeting that took place where the logistics of the speaking engagement were planned out. An administrator at the dean level told The Pipeline that then Police Chief Tracy Marrott asked if the campus police should wear their SWAT gear (not riot gear mind you...SWAT gear!). When he was told that their regular uniforms would suffice, Marrott apparently said something to the effect of "But if not now, when?"

Perhaps it was idle hands, itching for some action, that posted this erroneous information about Kidus Yohannes.

Everybody's working on the weekend

A nice little article in today's Tribune about the conveniences of weekend classes at UVSC.

Salt Lake Tribune - Weekend college: Schedule offers flexibility

Does mandatory health insurance make sense for college students?

Utah State University's student government will ask the Board of Regents to make health insurance mandatory for students enrolled in any of the state's public colleges and universities.

Salt Lake Tribune - USU student group to approach Regents over insurance

For years BYU has required all of its students to either be enrolled under their parent's policy or pay for campus health insurance.

But how could UVSC possibly afford to offer low-cost health insurance to its nearly 24000 students? How about dumping athletics?
