Big bucks on the way

Clyde Companies Inc has given $1 million to UVSC and uber-donor Ira Fulton has matched that gift dollar for dollar.

Part of that dough will go toward creating a four-year bachelor's program in construction management that focuses on highway and heavy railroad construction. The newly upgraded soccer field will get $300,000.

Former UVSC dance instructor's slip is showing

A weird little story in today's papers tell the tale of Mark Baker, a former dance instructor at UVSC, who was caught red-handed with dresses missing from the school's inventory.

The best part is that Baker had the ball(gown)s to feature the stolen gear in an online video production (man, we hope it was only a dance video) which was seen by someone at UVSC, who recognized the stuff and notified the authorities.

Baker, who has been suspended from his job as the director of SUU's ballroom dance company, will be in court later this month.

UVSC Trustee to challenge Cannon for 3rd district seat

Former BYU place-kicker and current UVSC Trustee Jason Chaffetz announced today that we will run against Chris Cannon for the republican nomination for Utah's 3rd district congressional seat.

With the July 1st deadline looming, folks at UVSC are scrambling to get all things university in order.

There are a lot of things that need fixin' on campus, just check out the comments section in the article above and you'll find folks bitchin' about things like the Math Department and student services. And how can you blame them?

But the best part of the article was this little nugget from our friends in the Athletics:

"Basically, our response is, we're ready to go through Division I transition," said Megan Kennedy, an assistant athletic director, explaining how UVSC is in its fifth of six years of provisional Division I status with the NCAA.


First of all, the move from college to university has nothing to do with the NCAA or Division I status. UVSC could start a Ph.D program tomorrow and it wouldn't change the fact that the school is not in a conference, and it is no closer to getting in a conference than it was five years ago.

Much like a certain war, UVSC Athletics has never come up with an exit strategy for when it fails to get into a conference next year. Will the school continue to be an independent? Can it afford to operate without conference funding, not to mention a far-flung travel schedule? Will fans support a team that will never develop rivalries with other conference schools? Will athletes sign scholarship agreements knowing that they have little to no chance of participating in national championships?

Yet the Athletic department says "We are ready!"

September 1st - AGENCY ASSIST-UVSC Police responded to Pinnacle Apartments to assist Orem Police with taking a juvenile runaway into custody. During the incident, a male juvenile was tased by Orem Police after the juvenile fought with the UVSC Officer. The male juvenile was booked into Slate Canyon Youth Detention Center.

September 2nd- DUI- A traffic stop resulted in the arrest of the 32 year old male driver for DUI. The driver was booked into the Utah COunty Jail and his car impounded.

September 4th- MEDICAL- A female collapsed near parking lot B after getting off a shuttle bus. The female was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Spetember 4th- AGENCY ASSIST-UVSC Police responded to Parkway Crossing to assist Orem Police with a report of a loud party.

September 4th- VEHICLE BURGLARY-A subwoofer and gold clubs were stolen from a vehicle parked in lot E.

September 4th- EVACUATION- The UVSC Baseball Stadium was evacuated during the Orem Owl baseball game due to severe weather. Patrons where evacuated to the McKay Events Center until the storm passed. There were no reports of injuries.

September 5th- DISORDERLY CONDUCT- A student was warned for Disorderly Conduct outside of the Liberal Arts building when he attempted to disrupt a small War Protest.

September 6th- MEDICAL-UVSC Police along with Orem Paramedics responded to the UVSC Bookstore on a report of an employee that had fainted. The employee was released on scene.

September 10th- POSSESSION OF PARAPHERNALIA-A 21 year old female UVSC student was arrested for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia in a Drug Free Zone during the Modest Mouse concert.

September 11th- PUBLIC INTOXICATION-UVSC police responded to the Provo Airport on a report of a flight student that was intoxicated. The suspect agreed to a portable breath test which resulted with a reading of .186 BAC. The student has since been kicked out of the flight program. The student also agreed to alcohol counseling.

September 12th- ILLEGAL CONSUMPTION/ DRUG ARREST-A 19 year old male was arrested during the MUSE Concert for Illegal Consumption and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia in a drug free zone.

September 13th- MENTAL SUBJECT- Officers responded to a mental subject at the Bookstore. The 29 year old subject was trespassed from the campus.

September 13th- VEHICLE BURGLARY- A vehicle was broken into in the Institute Parking lot and a wallet was stolen.

September 14th MEDICAL-UVSC Police along with Orem Paramedics responded to the Student Health Services on a report of a seizure. The adult female was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for further treatment.

September 14th- AGENCY ASSIST- UVSC Police responded to University Parkway on a traffic accident with injuries.

September 15th- OPEN CONTAINER-A 29 year old male was issued citations for Broken Windshield, Faulty Brake Lights, and Open Container. The suspect was initially stopped for the broken windshield. When the Officer made contact with the driver, the Officer noticed a strong odor of alcohol.

September 17th- MAN WITH GUN-Officers responded to Student Health Services on a report of a man with a gun. Officers arrived on scene and determined the man had a concealed weapons permit. The reporting party stated that the man was not threatening and appeared to have accidentally displayed his concealed weapon while adjusting his shirt.

September 17th- DRIVING ON SUSPENSION- A 21 year old male was issued several citations after he was stopped on his scooter for No Lights. The driver was issued citations for Driving on Suspension, No Proof of Insurance, and Faulty Equipment.

September 19th- TRAFFIC ACCIDENT- A motorcycle traveling east bound on College Drive was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound that attempted to turn left near the Institute Building. The driver of the motorcycle received minor injuries although the motorcycle was destroyed. Traffic on College Drive had to be rerouted for a short time while the accident was being investigated.

September 19th- AGENCY ASSIST-UVSC Police initiated a traffic stop on a Ryder van near 800 W and University Parkway after someone reported to Orem Police that the van had an odor of rotting flesh coming from it. The driver of the van had a good laugh and gave Officers consent to search. Officers were happy to report no dead bodies found.

September 20th- ALARM- Officers responded to the north UVSC Hangar at the Provo Airport on a burglar alarm.

September 21st- AGENCY ASSIST-UVSC Police responded to University Parkway and Main Street to assist Orem Police with a traffic accident.

September 21st- TRESPASS- Three juvenile males were warned for trespassing at the Education Building.

September 22nd- AGENCY ASSIST- Orem Police requested that a UVSC Officer respond to the area of 1100 W 1400 S on a report of a overdose. The UVSC Officer arrived on scene and found that a adult woman had overdosed on prescription pills. Orem Paramedics also responded to the scene.

Relying too much on internet might have cost Continuing Ed some students

Enrollment numbers for UVSC's School of Continuing Education are off this year, and it may have been caused by trying to save a buck or two.

Dixie plays the all-too-familiar Name Game

Last year when UVSC was bucking for a promotion there were a few discussions about what to call the damn thing if it indeed became a univeristy. But Sederburg and the legislature settled on Utah Valley University pretty early on, and that was that. And since that time nobody has really made too much noise about it.

But now the Name Game is beginning down south as Dixie State College looks to hook up with the University of Utah. The situation in St. George is a little more convoluted when you consider that the region has been called Dixie since the time of Brigham Young, and that some object to it's Confederate connotations.

October's Ethics Forum could provide fireworks

Right now in Utah there is hardly an issue bigger than school vouchers. Sure, polygamy is getting all the national attention, but now that Warren Jeffs is headed for the pokey vouchers will be front and center once again. And UVSC's Ethics Center is going to capitalize on all hubbub with a public forum next month.

So if you are on campus the night of October 3, say around seven-ish, swing on by the Faculty Seminar room (LC243) and check out the action. Guests include State Board of Education Chair Kim Burningham, Chairman of the Board & CEO of Overstock.com Patrick Byrne, Former Utah State PTA Education Commissioner Marilyn Kofford, and Paul T. Mero President of the Sutherland Institute.



If Mero's name seems familiar it might be that you caught his recent essay that he paid to put in local papers. Here it is if you missed it:

So we are sure that all you hip kids that "surf the net" have discovered The Lounge, UVSC marketing department's laid back "place for fun stuff". Consider it a digital oasis where weary "students, faculty, staff and others" can kick back and chill.

And check it out dude...you can download wicked cool stuff like UVSC wallpapers, or watch YouTube videos made by students (careful though..."Viewer discretion is advised. Some of these films may contain material which viewers may find objectionable.")

Whoa dude...look at this. The Lounge is sporting a killer listing of blogs about UVSC. No way....they got the Equity in Education blog! SWEET! PARTY!

But where is The Pipeline you ask. Well it turns out they don't like blogs about UVSC if they don't know who is writing them. And we all know The Pipeline prides itself on its anonymity. But come on Lounge...how can you deny us a place on your glorious list when we have enriched the lives of literally tens of people? Do the right thing and add The Pipeline. What the UTA expansion means for UVSC

You might have heard about the Utah Transit Authority's plans for more light rail lines in the Salt Lake valley and commuter rail extending into Utah Valley. Well now those plans have big federal dollars to get the ball rolling.

For those who travel along the I-15 corridor this is great news. And for UVSC this could be a monumental step in truly becoming a regional university. The campus's master plan map has a space for an intermodal hub, seen here:

Now we just have to wait several years, and countless construction cones, until it's built.
