Smokeless campus: Will USU's recent vote inspire UVU to ban tobacco

Student Government leaders at Utah State University have recently voted to ban smoking and all tobacco products on campus. If administrators approve the ban USU will join another hundred or so smokeless college campuses in the nation.

USU tries to snuff out campus smoking (The Daily Herald, February 7 2008

If the ban does indeed pass muster with the administration don't be surprised if other campuses in the state consider the move. And with UVSC having the highest percentage of LDS students of any public college in the world a tobacco ban seems to make a lot of sense.

Will there be a fight with the more liberal elements on campus if such a ban was considered by student government at UVSC? No doubt. If student leaders act unilaterally (like USU did) by not asking for a student referendum you could bet there will be a fierce battle. But those same liberal elements might not want to have it put to a full school vote, because there is little doubt that a tobacco ban would be approved by the majority.

And if such a ban was approved at UVSC you could count on Campus Police enforcing the letter of the law with all due diligence.

Why is this on the UVSC Police Website?

It has been nearly six months since UVSC student Kidus Yohannes was arrested for allegedly falsifying information on a firearms form. Currently he sits in Utah County Jail awaiting trial.

At the time of his arrest UVSC Police posted Yohannes's mugshot on their website, warning students that if they saw him on campus to call police. It seemed to make sense at the time...Yohannes's roommates had claimed that the Ethiopian immigrant had made threats against police and the military. The shootings at Virginia Tech were still fresh on everyone's minds.

But why does the UVSC Police department feel it necessary to still have Yohannes's mugshot on their page? And why does it include the caption "made terroristic threats and was aquiring weapons."

Beyond the poor spelling, the statement is potentially libelous. Yohannes has never been formally charged with making threats. As for acquiring weapons, he passed the necessary background checks with both alien ID numbers he used. So while he is being held on charges of falsifying permit documents, he did acquire the weapons legally.

Regardless, he has not been found guilty of anything just yet. But the Police website doesn't mention "charges" or "allegedly". They simply state that he made threats and was acquiring weapons. And by allowing this libelous statement to be viewable on the school's website UVSC could be sued.

And why is he on the website to begin with? He is in jail and thus currently poses no threat to the campus. It is almost like they are bragging about nabbing this guy, but they weren't the ones who arrested him in the first place. The arrest was made by Orem City...not UVSC campus police.

In the Pipeline's opinion this whole thing goes back to a much simpler issue: UVSC campus police are bored to tears.

For example, back during the whole Michael Moore hoopla in '04 there was a meeting that took place where the logistics of the speaking engagement were planned out. An administrator at the dean level told The Pipeline that then Police Chief Tracy Marrott asked if the campus police should wear their SWAT gear (not riot gear mind you...SWAT gear!). When he was told that their regular uniforms would suffice, Marrott apparently said something to the effect of "But if not now, when?"

Perhaps it was idle hands, itching for some action, that posted this erroneous information about Kidus Yohannes.

New article sheds light on Yohannes case

In an excellent piece of investigative journalism, College Times reporter Joseph Laney has uncovered several facts that call the arrest of UVSC student Kidus Yohannes into question.

Nine digits
Yohannes kept in solitary confinement based on numerical discrepancy
(College Times, October 22 2007)

You might recall that Yohannes, an Ethiopian immigrant, was arrested over the summer and charged with falsifying information on a firearms application. At the time of his arrest, which was shortly after the tragic campus shootings at Virginia Tech, his roommates claimed that Yohannes often talked about killing police officers and members of the military.

Laney's article examines the case against him thoroughly, and with evidence this flakey it makes one wonder why Yohannes is still held on $250,000 bail.

Police arrest UVSC student on weapons charges

Acting on a tip by concerned roommates, members of Orem and Provo police departments arrested 20-year-old UVSC student and Ethiopian national Kidus Chane Yohannes and charging him with two felonies-- giving false information on a gun background check and unlawful acquisition and possession of a financial card.

Here are two articles on the story from the local papers:

Earlier today the following e-mail went out to all campus employees:

Yesterday, Orem Police arrested a UVSC student who is a resident alien because of the proactive nature of his roommates. The roommates were worried about the amount of ammunition Kiddus Chane Yohannes allegedly stockpiled, and his fascination with violent death, particularly by gunfire. He is currently in the Utah County Jail for attempting to illegally purchase assault weapons. He has a history of weapons violations. Kiddus also reportedly has possession of two AK47s that have not been recovered. He has been restricted from campus pursuant to our policy and will have his status as a student reviewed through the Judicial Affairs Office. If Kiddus is located on campus or in public use EXTREME CAUTION as he has a weapons violation history (picture is attached). If you have any questions or concerns contact Vice President Peterson.
